How to play R.U.S.E.: The Art of Deception Windows
R.U.S.E. Deluxe Edition that we uploaded on our website includes the base game with all DLCs (The Manhattan Project Pack, The Chimera Pack, The Pack of The Rising Sun) and bonus rewards. For installation instruction check the Readme inside the archive.
The game has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 10 and Windows 11, it works fine, the game supports widescreen and high resolutions up to 4k. You may experience some small troubles when you play the game on modern systems, check our Notes for more details
Notes:
- If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
- It is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and NET Framework for the correct work of the game. Also it is recommended to install K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game videos
- The game works on DirectX 9, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
- The game correctly supports wides creen and high screen resolutions up to 4k. It also has a native support for ultrawide screens and multi-display setups, but with small issues, such as pre-rendered videos being cut off at the edges, or when the short picture-in-picture videos that appear on the screen at special moments, cover the in-game map. Check WSGF page for more details
- If the game doesn't start - run it in compatibility mode with old Windows, like Windows 7, and as administrator. To do that right click on exe-file or desktop shortcut -> Properties -> Compatibility
- If it didn't help, try the next: right click on exe-file -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows Vista SP1" and "Run as administrator", also tick the box "Disable Full-Screen optimization". Optionally, try to select the compatibility mode with Windows XP SP2. Check this thread for more details
- For Windows 10 & 11 users: if the game doesn't start, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and close the service "TabletInputService" (Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service), it seems it conflicts with the game
- The game is multilingual, it supports 8 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Czech, Polish & Russian, with full audio & text localizations (for Czech it is text-only). You can change the language in Options (My RUSE -> Options).
- How to change the language if it doesn't change in Options: go to
C:/users/%username%/AppData/Roaming/SmartSteamEmu/21970/local
, and in files Option.ini and LastKnowGoodOptions.ini change the lineLanguage
to change the language of text, changeLanguageAudio
to change the language of audio (EN for English, FR for French, GER for German, ITA for Italian, SPA for Spanish, CZ for Czech, POL for Polish, RU for Russian) - Simplified Chinese translation patch showed few generic warnings, it is safe to use. That patch translates about 85% of in-game texts, the other 15% are not finished. Check this page for new versions of that translation patch (the website probably will open only in Mainland China)
- The key bindings cannot be changed in game, but you can try to change it by edit of config-files in
C:/users/%username%/AppData/Roaming/SmartSteamEmu/21970/local
. Please note that each key is represented as a number, so you will have to experiment with numbers; make sure to make a back-up of original files first. If you have the game on Steam or Steam Deck, config-files are in different folder, check PCGamingWiki for the correct path - The official multiplayer service was shut down on January 25, 2024, so the multiplayer against live players is not playable anymore. But it seems that the cooperative mode where you play with friends versus AI-bots is still working, Reddit community of the game features some videos where people play R.U.S.E. in multiplayer in 2025
- You can find some mods for the game on ModDB. Here's also a guide how you can create your own mods for the game
- The game has controller support, to play the game with gamepad you need to enable "Joystick" in game options (My RUSE -> Options). If the game doesn't recognize your controller - try using one of the additional tools from PCGamingWiki guide for controllers
- Don't forget to check PCGamingWiki page if you have troubles! Also, we recommend to check Steam forums
